Don’t Knock It ‘Til You Try It: Trader Joe’s Sweet Potato Gnocchi

Trade – A little while back, I received an email from Trader Joe’s asking me to sample some of their new products, one of which was their Sweet Potato Gnocchi. As someone who loves sweet potatoes and gnocchi, I was immediately intrigued, so I headed to my local Trader Joe’s to give them a try. The resulting sweet potato gnocchi dish was simple and delicious — both things that are perfect for food bloggers like me! Here’s the recipe…

Ingredients

Trader Joe’s sweet potato gnocchi are made with pre-made dough that is covered in olive oil, then topped with garlic and parmesan cheese. The seasoning and flavor of the gnocchi is mainly determined by the toppings. Trader Joe’s has a variety of topping choices, such as pesto, butter, butternut squash sauce or a sage brown butter sauce.

It is recommended to cook Trader Joe’s sweet potato gnocchi right after removing it from the package and before adding any additional toppings or sauces. Once done cooking you can either eat them raw or serve them hot with your desired toppings! To add more flavor, use a dipping sauce like truffle oil or herb mayonnaise (my personal favorite). Some people also add some extra Parmesan cheese to the top which provides an added layer of crunchy goodness.

I recommend this product because it tastes great and is so easy to make–especially if you don’t have time for an elaborate meal. These only take about 15 minutes and they’re filling enough for a light lunch or dinner!

The Process

If you’re not a fan of regular potato gnocchi, Trader Joe’s also sells sweet potato gnocchi! Trader Joe’s sweet potato gnocchi are great because they have the same texture as regular gnocchi, but offer a less carb-heavy alternative that would work well for those following a low-carb diet. Plus, this type of gnocchi cooks in just six minutes and is available year round. For more information on how to prepare these tasty treats, check out the provided instructions below.

1) Cut Trader Joe’s sweet potato gnocchi into small pieces by hand or using kitchen shears.

2) Place the cut pieces in boiling water with a teaspoon of salt added per quart.

3) Boil for six minutes and serve immediately.

4) Top with your favorite sauce – we recommend adding fresh basil leaves (1 tbsp per serving), then add tomato sauce, balsamic vinegar, garlic cloves (2 whole cloves per serving), and olive oil (1 tbsp per serving).

5) Bring everything to a boil before reducing heat and simmering for 20 minutes – don’t forget to stir occasionally!

6) Add fresh grated Parmesan cheese on top before serving if desired. The verdict? These were some of the best tasting gnocchi I’ve ever had, without sacrificing flavor! If you love potatoes like I do and want to try something new, Trader Joe’s has got your back. They’ve done an excellent job replicating the textures of traditional gnocchi while still incorporating a lower-carb option that won’t blow up your macros. The only complaint I have about these tasty treats is their price – $4.99 for eight ounces is pretty steep when compared to similar products from other stores. But if you’re looking for a guilt free treat that will satisfy any cravings, it might be worth it…

The Result

* Step One: Take Trader Joe’s sweet potato gnocchi out of the box and cook according to package instructions.

* Step Two: Season with salt, pepper, butter, and Parmesan cheese. Sprinkle a handful of finely chopped rosemary on top. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes before removing from heat. Dig in! These are some seriously delicious gnocchi. The only thing that would make them better is if they were homemade!

* Rating: 5/5

* Recommendation: If you’re looking for an alternative to traditional pasta, these are your best bet. They taste great, are really easy to make, and contain healthy ingredients like squash and pumpkin seeds. They come with 3.2 oz or 12-ounces per bag which makes 8 servings so be sure to share these or freeze them for later use.

* I personally found that there was just enough sweetness to make these satisfying without making me feel heavy and bloated after eating them, but they could potentially be too sweet for those who are sensitive to sugar intake (a little bit goes a long way).

* A quick word of caution: their packaging can be deceiving because it seems like there should be more noodles than what’s actually in the bag!
